A little about the Island of Molokai and the very popular Molokai bread

Map of the Island of Molokai in Hawaii

As we mentioned in our Big Island wrap up post on Saturday and in yesterday’s video post of our Kona to Molokai flight, we recently flew to the Island of Molokai in Hawaii to spend another week in Paradise!

Now unless we’re talking to a Hawaiian native or to someone who knows Hawaii extremely well, the typical reaction when we told people we were going to Molokai was… “What’s/Where’s Molokai?”…

…and to be honest, this is our 3rd trip to Hawaii and we didn’t know anything about Molokai till this trip where we decided Molokai would be one of the Islands we’d be enjoying for 1 of our 5 weeks over here.

(That’s a great example of “Getting a Real Life Education” that we talk about in our Free eBook… it’s not until you actually visit somewhere in real life that you really start to understand what it’s all about)

Now to give you a feel of what this island is like, here’s a breakdown of this beautiful place by a Molokai Tourism website:

  • Welcome to Molokai, The Most Hawaiian Island. Often called “The Friendly Island” because the aloha spirit flourishes here.
  • If you’re looking for the real Hawaii, this is it.
  • If you’re looking for old Hawaii, this is it.
  • If you’re looking for breathtaking natural beauty, rain forests or deserted beaches, this is it.
  • If you’re looking for glitz and glamour, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
  • This is an honest look at an island lost in time.
  • An island where no building is taller than a palm tree.
  • Where aloha is not just a word, it’s a way of life.
  • Where the longest white sand beach in Hawaii will probably have only your foot prints on it.
  • An island where there is so little automobile traffic, there’s not a single traffic light.
  • There’s no mall, no elevators and no neon. No burger wars here.
  • Shopping is done in small, friendly businesses in Kaunakakai, the largest town, and in the villages of Kualapu’u and Maunaloa.
  • Life here is slow and relaxed.
  • It’s rural and peaceful.
  • It’s like stepping back in time 50 years.
  • It’s a place like no other.

And you know what, in the day and half so far that we’ve been here the above is exactly the way it is… and that’s a good thing! 🙂

No traffic lights on the whole island… cool!

Not one franchise, brand name store in sight… cool!

No buildings, no traffic jams, nothing but nature and a relaxed way of life! 🙂

So, keep following us while we’re in Molokai this week and we’ll show you around “The Friendly Isle”!

By the way, if ever on Molokai a unique event you HAVE to take part in here, like we did last night (it happens at night as they’re baking for the next morning), was to stand in a long line up of other hungry bread lovers, and wait your turn to get fresh baked HOT MOLOKAI BREAD

Yup, straight from the oven into your mouth…

(just the incredible aroma coming from the stoves would make you silly)

… and if that wasn’t already enough, it comes with a choice of jam toppings and stuffing such as strawberry, blueberry, butter, cinnamon and cream cheese.

Can you say, Yummy!

We talked to some local experts who have eaten many loaves and are still enthusiastic about it, and asked which was the best kind to try, and all of them came back with the same favorite choice…

So we went with it too…Cinnamon butter and cream cheese (we threw in a bit of Strawberry too :-)) and there’s only five words to describe the taste…

…melt-in-your-mouth-freaking- D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! 🙂

The sign for Molokai's popular hot bread

At around 8:30pm each evening, once you see this sign you know your tummy is about to be happy! 🙂
